Since 1968, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver
spoke these words at the first International
Special Olympics games at Soldier Field,
athletes with intellectual disabilities from all
over the world have had the opportunity to
participate in sports programming.  Nearly
10,000 Special Olympians compete in the
Hoosier state.  However, with no formalized
program in Allen County, an estimated
3,400 potential athletes had no opportunity
to participate.  Until now!   Beginning in
September 2007, local athletes joined the
world-wide movement, and trained with the
first ever Special Olympics Allen County
team.

More than 25 athletes registered for the
inagural sport - bowling.  After 10 weeks of
training, and area competitions, seven
athletes qualified and competed at the State
level in December.

While Special Olympics Allen County is up
and running the work is far from over.  The
community volunteers that make up the
County Management Team (CMT),  continue
to work  recruit athletes, volunteers and
coaches; secure community support and
funding; and offer more opportunities for the
athletes in and around Allen County.

“Let me win.  But if I cannot win,
let me be brave in the attempt.”
